Minister Židan attends business conference at EXPO Milano 2015

Milan, 18 June 2015 ? Today, the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food of the Republic of Slovenia, Dejan Židan, concluded a working visit to Milan. As part of his visit, Minister Židan yesterday attended a Slovenian?Italian business conference, visited Milan?s SO.GE.MI wholesale market, and met with top management representatives of leading Italian food-processing companies. He also toured the World Exposition (EXPO), where he visited the Slovenian and other national pavilions.

Yesterday morning, Minister Židan visited the wholesale market SO.GE.MI, which manages all wholesale food markets in Milan. The wholesale market, where fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and flowers are transhipped and sold, covers a vast million square metres. The visit continued with Minister Židan?s participation in a meeting of Slovenian and Italian business delegations from agriculture and the lumber business. The meeting was attended by more than 40 representatives from 28 agriculture, lumber and furniture companies and associated institutions. In his opening address, Minister Židan said that in the first quarter of 2015 economic activity had continued to expand, with gross domestic product up by 2.9% on the same quarter of the previous year. This was also boosted by growth in domestic consumption, meaning that GDP has become more balanced compared to previous quarters, when growth in economic activity was led by exports, though exports did remain an important factor.

Minister Židan pointed to the improvements recorded in segments of agriculture and the food industry in Slovenia. A moderate increase in the number of enterprises in the food industry was recorded in 2014. At the same time productivity, value added per employee and net profit all increased. With 6% growth, the upward trend in sales in foreign markets recorded by food-processing companies in previous years continued in 2014 and rose to 23%, which indicates their stronger focus on exports and consequent weaker dependence on the domestic market. ?These data demonstrate that Slovenian agricultural products are of a high quality and innovativeness and are thus able to compete in the global market-place,? Minister Židan said, continuing that in Slovenia quality and the security of food on the market are very important and are ensured to consumers by an appropriate inspection system. This system has ensured that no example of serious misconduct within the food supply chain has been detected in recent years and also represents a competitive advantage for Slovenia in terms of food sales in foreign markets.? In his speech, Minister Židan also touched upon Slovenia?s initiative, addressed to the United Nations, to designate 20 May as World Honeybee Day. When drafting a platform for the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia included food security ? and in this context the World Honeybee Day initiative ? among the priorities related to its activities within the UN. The initiative and Slovenia?s activities relating to the World Honeybee Day designation also provide economic opportunities for beekeeping, facilitate transfer of knowledge and examples of good practice, and promote tourism and Slovenia?s global visibility. Italy is one of the main partners of the Slovenian food-processing industry and is particularly important because of its vicinity and culinary tradition. Trade in agricultural products and foodstuffs between Slovenia and Italy is robust and exceeded EUR 540 million in 2014. Undoubtedly, the food and agricultural product market offers further opportunities to increase international trade and sales of Slovenian agricultural and food products on the demanding Italian market.

2014 also brought about an improvement in the situation in the wood-processing industry, with some of its segments (e.g. wooden houses) becoming visible throughout Europe. The business conference was one of the major business events accompanying EXPO Milano 2015 and was organised in collaboration between the public agency SPIRIT Slovenia, the Chamber of Craft and Small Business of Slovenia, i.e. its Furniture and Wood-Processing Association, Wood Industry Cluster, and the Chamber of Agricultural and Food Enterprises. Within the scheduled business events, at the end of the day Minister Židan met with top management representatives of some of the largest Italian food-processing companies, Vega, COOP, SO.GE.MI and Idea3, and representatives of the Slovenian Regional Economic Union established in Trieste. Italian companies feature among the major organised large distributors of food and consumer goods and are oriented towards logistic and structural overhauling of wholesale markets; they are also engaged in expanding the range of agro-food sector products and services.

In the afternoon, Minister Židan toured the World Exposition (EXPO) and made his first stop at the Slovenian Pavilion, presenting the country under the slogan ?I feel Slovenia. Green. Active. Healthy.? These topics are closely related to food ? the main theme of this year?s World Exposition. Slovenia is presented by its national pavilion of 800 square metres situated on a 1,910-square-metre site in the middle of the exhibition venue. The Slovenian Pavilion?s pyramid design is reminiscent of Alpine mountains, the Pannonian Plain and Mediterranean hills melding into arable lands, all above an amazing underground world. The pavilion is made of natural materials, primarily wood and glass. Forests cover some 60% of the territory of Slovenia, and this structurally demanding wooden building mirrors the competitiveness of Slovenian know-how in building with wood. The Slovenian Pavilion is being visited by some 4,000 people per day, while the organisers expect that the EXPO will be visited by some 20 million people in total. Slovenia is presented through five main themes: salt pans, bees, thermal and mineral waters, hiking and cycling, and the measurement of black carbon particles project. The pavilion will also host a diverse six-month programme featuring ten Slovenian regions.
