Open letter to:
To the President of the United States
Greetings,
Dear Mr. President,
Thank you very much for coming out strongly in support of the Sudanese people and their quest for liberty, peace, and justice.
Thanks to the Secretary of State for his non stop efforts and phone calls with leaders around the world to find a peaceful solution to the crisis in Sudan.
On October 25th, Sudan was destabilized by a military coup that threatens to upend all the progress made towards democracy since the dictator Omar al-Bashir was deposed by the will of the people two years ago.
I left Sudan almost exactly thirty years ago to escape al-Bashir’s tyranny and build a better life for myself and my family in the United States. Although the US has been very good to me, I have always been aware that so many back at home did not have access to the comforts I could take for granted. In the 2019 revolution, I saw a possibility that newer generations of Sudanese would find that better life at home. Now, at the beginning of this week, I received the news that al-Bashir’s party has reared its head again, plotting a coup that led to the imprisonment of Sudan’s civilian leaders and a return to military rule.
Now I write this message to urge the United States to stand with the Sudanese people against tyranny.
I sincerely appreciate the efforts of the Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa, as well as the Department of State and many Senators and representatives, who spoke out in support of the Sudanese youth who shed their blood to get the country to the first democratic government in thirty years.
But the fact is: we can do more. I look to the 2008 political crisis in Kenya as a model for the type of aid the US can lend Sudan now. Then Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice traveled to Nairobi from Dar As Salam for a few hours, met with the two leaders who were at odds, and obtained a commitment from them to de-escalate the tension and sit down for negotiation. The Secretary’s visit was followed by sending the late Kofi Annan as head of a mediation team. Kofi Annan’s report could be a good blueprint to solve the lingering issues in Sudan.
I recommend sending a senior government official, a cabinet-level secretary for instance, to pave the way for a mediation team. The senior official’s visit could be short, a day or two with the main objective of showing the US support of democratic values and recognition of the youths’ insistence on peaceful resistance. This is an opportunity to demonstrate that the United States will spare no effort in assisting democracy seekers around the world.
Sincerely,
Omer Mubarak
