سميت سنجة بهذا الاسم على فتاة سودانية من قبيلة الدينكا فارعة الطول فائقة الجمال ذات قوام جميل وملمس ناعم وكان ابوها يسمى عبد الله الدينكاوي اتوا من الجنوب في طريقهم نحو الشمال . وفي هذه المنطقة مرض ابوها مما جعلهم يضطرون للمكوث في هذه المنطقة . فقابلهم احد الرعاة العرب الجائلين في تلك المنطقة والذي اعتنى بالشيخ المريض واعجب بالفتاة فتزوجها وبنوا بيتا من القش والطين وكان هذا اول بيت في تلك المنطقة والتي سميت فيما بعد بسنجة عبد الله . وفي ايام مملكة الفونج صارت مدينة وحذف اسم عبد الله وصارت تعرف باسم سنجة ( اي بدون عبد الله ) والى يومنا هذا نعرف باسم سنجة – وكما حدث في مدني ( مدني السني ) والفاشر ( فاشر السلطان ) والجنينة ( الجنينة دار اندوكة ) وغيرها كتير .
