هو من خرب سمعة الثورة المهدية التى قادها محمد أحمد المهدي وكان المهدي رجلا صالحا تقيا ورعا مصلحا نجح في ثورته التى طردت الأتراك من السودان ولكن خلفه عبد الله التعايشي الذي إضطهد الأشراف وابناء النيل امثال الزاكي طمل والنجومي للتخلص منهم لخوفه من منازعته في السلطة وهو يمثل نقطة سوداء في تاريخ السودان
